Eat Smart Nutrition Consultants are a team of 4 Accredited Practicing Dietitians and Sports Dietitians who work throughout Brisbane and the Gold Coast. We work with sporting teams such as the Brisbane Broncos, Qld Roar, Qld Reds and Qld Firebirds as well as individual athletes, recreational athletes and the general public.
Many people we see in our clinics every day complain of lack of time, skill or energy to plan and prepare healthy and tasty food. Others have simply run out of ideas for the age old question “what’s for dinner?”. Often people are unsure what makes a healthy meal as opposed to an unhealthy one, or how to modify recipes to suit their nutritional needs.
Eat Smart is joining forces with The Canny Cook to bring you healthy recipes, shopping lists and nutritional analysis in an easy format. We have assessed each recipe which bears the Eat Smart logo to determine its suitability for those watching their weight, looking after their heart or choosing lower GI meals.
Look for the heart , balance scales and GI symbols on the recipes. Now all you have to do is cook the meal!
How did we assess the meal?
One of our experienced staff has assessed each recipe which has the Eat Smart logo on it. Recipes have been assessed for their:
- Total energy content or kilojoules
- Total fat
- Saturated fat
- Glycaemic index
- Sodium or salt
- Other favourable factors such as fibre content, calcium and other mineral content, a balanced meal (includes a good source of protein, carbohydrate and vegetables)
The symbol denotes recipes which are heart friendly. These recipes are moderate in total fat, low in saturated fat and are low or reduced in salt.
The symbol characterises recipes which are weight friendly. These recipes are low or moderate in total fat and are energy controlled. These recipes are often a balanced meal as well, that is they contain a lean source of protein, a good source of carbohydrate and plenty of vegetables or salad. These recipes are also likely to be high in fibre and lower in glycaemic index as these provide fullness. Less hungry people eat less which helps with weight control.
The symbol indicates this recipe is low in glycaemic index or contains some foods which are low in GI. Not all foods and meals have been tested for GI so some recipes may be a clinical estimation of glycaemic index. Low GI foods are helpful for those people with diabetes or pre-diabetes, those watching their weight or for active people who need longer lasting energy.
So happy and healthy cooking! |
